Prescription Medication for Infections

Ciclopirox gel is used to treat certain fungal skin infections such as ringworm (tinea corporis) and athlete’s foot (tinea pedis) between the toes. These fungal infections can be contagious. This medication is also used to treat a scalp condition called seborrheic dermatitis. Ciclopirox is an antifungal medication that works by stopping the growth of fungus.

Topical nystatin is an antifungal that is used for the treatment of cutaneous and mucocutaneous fungal infections caused by Candida albicans and other susceptible Candida species.

Ciclopirox shampoo is a topical medication used to control seborrheic dermatitis (a condition that causes dry, flaky, and itchy skin) of the scalp. Ciclopirox is an antifungal medication that works by stopping the growth of fungus. The shampoo is for use on the hair and scalp only.

Nystatin/triamcinolone topical is used to treat fungal infections of the skin caused by Candida (yeast). The combination of an antifungal (nystatin) and a corticosteroid (triamcinolone) works to kill the yeast and alleviate symptoms of the infection such as skin itching, inflammation and redness.

Betamethasone/Clotrimazole cream is used to treat fungal infections including jock itch (tinea cruris), athlete’s foot (tinea pedis), and ringworm (tinea corporis). This medication helps to relieve itching, swelling and redness, while treating and reducing spread of the infection.

Cephalexin capsules are a type of antibiotic used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections, including those affecting the skin, throat, respiratory tract, urinary tract, and bones. Belonging to the cephalosporin class, cephalexin works by interfering with the bacteria's cell wall formation, ultimately leading to its destruction. It is typically taken by mouth every 6 to 12 hours, depending on the severity and type of infection. Cephalexin is not effective against viral infections like the flu or common cold. Proper adherence to the prescribed course is important to ensure complete eradication of the bacteria and to help prevent antibiotic resistance.

Acyclovir is available as a topical antiviral medication used for the treatment of cold sores and/or genital herpes symptoms. Duration of treatment most often ranges from 4 to 10 days.

Urea cream is a topical moisturizer used to treat dry, rough, and scaly skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, and keratosis. It works by softening and hydrating the skin while also helping to remove dead skin cells. Urea has natural keratolytic properties, meaning it breaks down hardened or thickened skin, making it effective for conditions like calluses and cracked heels. Higher concentrations may also be used to treat nail disorders. Regular use of urea cream helps improve skin texture and retain moisture, promoting smoother and healthier skin.

Imiquimod is topical prescription indicated for the treatment of genital and perianal warts. Imiquimod enhances both the innate and the acquired immune systems and thereby stimulates a response against abnormal skin cells, which are then eliminated through the body's own mechanisms.

Podofilox is topical prescription indicated for the treatment of external genital warts and perianal warts (Condyloma acuminatum). Podofilox slowly kills external genital warts. The warts will change from a fleshy skin color to a dry, crusted, dead look, then disappear.

Amoxicillin is a penicillin-type antibiotic used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections, including respiratory tract infections, ear infections, urinary tract infections, and skin infections. It works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall formation, leading to the destruction of the bacteria. Amoxicillin is commonly prescribed in capsule form for its effectiveness and ease of use. To ensure the best results, it should be taken exactly as prescribed, and the full course should be completed even if symptoms improve early, to prevent antibiotic resistance.

Topical ketoconazole is used to treat skin infections caused by fungus or yeast, working to inhibit fungal growth. Ketoconazole cream is used for treatment of tinea corporis (ringworm of the body), tinea cruris (jock itch), tinea pedis (athlete’s foot), tinea versicolor (“sun fungus”), cutaneous candidiasis (yeast infection of the skin), and seborrheic dermatitis.

Mupirocin is a topical antibiotic used to treat impetigo due to Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes. It may also be used to treat secondary skin infections (e.g., localized infection of wounds, burns, dermatitis).

Methylprednisolone is an oral steroid used to treat inflammation or pain caused by acute flares of arthritis, gout, and lupus. It is also used to treat allergic-type reactions such as seasonal allergies, asthma, skin rashes and itching by suppressing the immune system.

Augmentin is a combination antibiotic containing amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium, used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections, including respiratory tract infections, ear infections, sinusitis, urinary tract infections, and skin infections. Amoxicillin, a penicillin-type antibiotic, works by stopping bacterial growth, while clavulanate potassium helps prevent bacterial resistance by inhibiting beta-lactamase enzymes. This combination enhances effectiveness against certain antibiotic-resistant bacteria, making Augmentin a broad-spectrum treatment option.
