Emtricitabine and tenofovir disoproxil combination pill (Truvada) is used to prevent the transmission of HIV from infected individuals to uninfected individuals.  

  • Used to prevent the transmission of HIV to non-infected individuals
  • Must verify HIV negative status before starting treatment, and every 3 months while continuing the medication
  • Taken once daily as a combination tablet of emtricitabine and tenofovir disoproxil (200 mg-300 mg) in addition to safe sex practices
  • Must be taken every day on a strict regimen to prevent transmission
  • May be taken with or without food and often supplemented with calcium and vitamin D for bone health
