Azithromycin

Azithromycin is an oral antibiotic used for a wide range of bacterial infections. When taken as a five day regimen, a ‘Z-Pak’ is often used to target bacteria associated with upper respiratory tract infections, including community acquired pneumonia.

have not had a hypersensitivity reaction to azithromycin, erythromycin, other macrolides, or any component of the formulation
do not have a history of heart arrythmias
do not have a history of cholestatic jaundice or hepatic dysfunction associated with previous use of azithromycin
do not have a diagnosis of Myasthenia gravis
understand this medication may interact with medications being metabolized similarly, including phenobarbital, phenytoin, rifampin, and St. John’s Wort will use the medication as prescribed for the appropriate treatment and duration
am not pregnant or breastfeeding
will use the medication as prescribed for the appropriate treatment and duration
understand this medication is associated with altered cardiac conduction including prolonged QT interval and ventricular tachycardia, increased risk for Clostridioides difficile (C. diff) infection, liver injury, immediate and delayed hypersensitivity reactions, and hearing loss

Azithromycin Medication Description
Azithromycin, commonly known as a “Z-Pak,” is an oral antibiotic used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria, making it useful for upper and lower respiratory tract infections, including bronchitis, sinus infections, strep throat, and community-acquired pneumonia. The convenience of the Z-Pak lies in its prepackaged dosing regimen, which is designed to be simple and easy to follow over a five-day course.

Usage Instructions
- Typically used for the treatment of upper respiratory bacterial infections, including bronchitis, sinusitis, strep throat, and pneumonia
- Packaged as a five-day regimen: 2 tablets (500 mg) on day 1, followed by 1 tablet (250 mg) once daily on days 2 through 5
- Complete the full course as prescribed, even if symptoms improve early
Warnings & Precautions
- Not effective for viral illnesses
- May cause side effects including diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain, or headache
- Rare but serious side effects include allergic reactions, liver problems, or abnormal heart rhythms (QT prolongation)
- Should not be used without the guidance of a healthcare provider, especially in individuals with a history of liver disease or heart rhythm issues
Azithromycin Side Effects

Side effects may include headache, stomach pain, and upset stomach. Taking this medication with food may help reduce side effects.
