Sumatriptan is used for the management of acute migraine headaches with or without aura. It should not be used for more than 10 days a month or for chronic headaches.

am 18 years or older
have not had a hypersensitivity reaction to sumatriptan or any component of the formulation
have a diagnosis of migraines and have already taken sumatriptan as prescribed by an authorized healthcare provider
am not pregnant or breastfeeding
understand this medication is not recommended in those 65 years and older due to cardiovascular risk
do not have a history of cardiovascular disease or ischemic coronary artery disease (e.g. history of heart attack (myocardial infarction), angina pectoris)
do not have a history of Prinzmetal angina
do not have a history of stroke or transient ischemic attack
do not have the following conditions: peripheral vascular disease, ischemic bowel disease, uncontrolled hypertension
do not have a seizure disorder do not have Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome or other conditions associated with heart arrhythmias
do not have hemiplegic migraine or basilar migraine
have not used a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) such as isocarboxazid, phenelzine, tranylcypromine, or selegiline currently or within the past 14 days
have not taken another triptan (e.g. sumatriptan) or ergotamine (e.g. methysergide, dihydroergotamine) in the past 24 hours
understand this medication increases the risk of life-threatening events including heart attack, stroke, cardiac arrest, splenic infarction, and death
understand use of this medication for more than 10 days per month may worsen headaches
understand this medication may cause vision loss or abnormalities
do not have hepatic (liver) impairment, renal (kidney) impairment

Sumatriptan Medication Description
Sumatriptan nasal spray is a prescription medication used for the acute treatment of migraine headaches with or without aura, especially when nausea, vomiting, or difficulty swallowing makes oral medication less practical. As a member of the triptan class, sumatriptan works by narrowing widened blood vessels in the brain and blocking pain signals, helping relieve migraine pain and associated symptoms such as nausea, light sensitivity, and sound sensitivity.

The nasal spray provides a convenient and fast-acting alternative to tablets, allowing for migraine relief without swallowing pills. It is intended for use at the first sign of migraine symptoms and is not meant for migraine prevention or chronic daily headaches.

Usage Instructions
- Administer a single spray into one nostril at the first sign of migraine onset
- If symptoms return or do not fully resolve, a second dose may be given after at least 2 hours
- Do not exceed 2 doses in a 24-hour period
- Not intended for use on more than 10 days per month to avoid medication overuse headaches
- Follow the specific administration instructions provided with the nasal spray device for best results
Warnings & Precautions
- Not suitable for individuals at risk for coronary artery disease without prior evaluation by a healthcare provider
- Avoid use if you have uncontrolled high blood pressure, certain heart rhythm disorders, or a history of stroke
- Possible side effects include unusual taste, nasal discomfort, dizziness, flushing, tingling, or fatigue
- Rare but serious side effects include chest pain, shortness of breath, vision changes, or severe allergic reactions. Seek medical attention immediately if these occur
- Do not take other triptans or ergotamine-containing medications within 24 hours of sumatriptan use
- Not recommended for individuals 65 years and older unless specifically approved by a provider
Sumatriptan Side Effects

Side effects may include nasal discomfort, congestion, and change in taste. Although rare, additional side effects include severe dizziness, vision changes, burning or numbness, and vomiting.
