Sumatriptan is used for the management of acute migraine headaches with or without aura. It should not be used for more than 10 days a month or for chronic headaches. 

  • Used to alleviate migraine headaches with or without aura
  • Taken as soon as symptoms of migraine appear
  • May repeat dose one time after 2 hours if no relief, with a maximum dose of 100 mg per dose and 200 mg in 24 hours
  • Not suitable to use for more than 10 days per month
  • Not suitable for individuals at risk for coronary artery disease without prior evaluation by a provider or individuals 65 years and older
