Spinosad

Spinosad is a unique topical medication because it is used to manage both lice and scabies. It is derived from the fermentation of a specific bacteria in soil that works to paralyze and kill the organism causing the infestation. In treating lice, spinosad is applied to a dry scalp and hair for 10 minutes, then rinsed in just one application.

Spinosad Side Effects
Spinosad topical suspension (Natroba®) is a prescription medication used to treat infestations of head lice and scabies. Derived from the fermentation of a naturally occurring soil bacterium, spinosad targets the parasite’s nervous system, leading to paralysis and death. It is effective against both live lice and unhatched eggs, which helps reduce the need for multiple treatments.

How to Use

For Head Lice:
- Apply to dry scalp and hair, ensuring complete coverage from roots to ends.
- Leave in place for 10 minutes, then rinse thoroughly with warm water.
- Shampoo and towel-dry hair after rinsing.
- In many cases, a single application is sufficient; repeat in 7 days if live lice are still detected.
- Wash clothing, bedding, hats, combs, and brushes in hot water or dry clean to prevent reinfestation.
For Scabies:
- Apply a thin layer of suspension over the entire body from the neck down, covering all skin surfaces. In infants and young children, the scalp, hairline, temples, and forehead may also need to be treated.
- Leave on the skin for 6 hours (or overnight), then rinse off thoroughly with warm water.
- A second treatment may be prescribed 7 days later if live mites are still present or symptoms persist.
- Wash bedding, clothing, and towels in hot water and dry on a hot cycle to prevent reinfestation.
Important Notes and Warnings
- For external use only; do not ingest or apply to the eyes.
- Avoid contact with eyes, mouth, and mucous membranes. If accidental contact occurs, rinse thoroughly with water.
- Use with caution in individuals allergic to spinosad or similar medications.
- Possible side effects include redness, itching, dryness, or irritation at the site of application.
- Not recommended for infants younger than 6 months without provider guidance.
- Spinosad kills lice, eggs, and mites, but itching may continue for days to weeks as the skin recovers.
