Silver sulfadiazine is an antibiotic cream used for prevention and treatment of infection for second- and third-degree burns. Commonly prescribed to treat and prevent infection with severe sunburns characterized by blistering of the skin and severe pain.

Am 18 years or older
Have not had a hypersensitivity reaction to silver sulfadiazine, other sulfur-containing drugs (e.g. Bactrim) or any component of its formulation
Am not pregnant or breastfeeding and understand this product is contraindicated for pregnant women approaching or at term due to risk of hyperbilirubinemia in infants
Am using this medication as indicated for treatment or prevention of wound sepsis (infection) of a second- or third-degree burn which has been diagnosed by a licensed healthcare provider
Do not have renal (kidney) or hepatic (liver) impairment
Do not have G6PD deficiency
Understand this is for external use only, avoiding contact with eyes
Understand that prolonged use should be avoided as it may result in fungal or bacterial superinfection, including C. difficile-associated diarrhea (CDAD)
Will discontinue use if sensitivity or irritation occurs

Silver Sulfadiazine Cream Medication Description
Silver sulfadiazine is a topical antibiotic cream used to prevent and treat infections in second- and third-degree burns. It works by releasing silver ions that stop the growth of bacteria and yeast on the damaged skin, reducing the risk of infection while promoting healing. In addition to burn injuries, it may also be used for severe sunburns with blistering and significant pain when prescribed by a healthcare provider.

This medication is generally well tolerated, with side effects being rare when used as directed.

Usage Instructions
- Apply exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider, typically once or twice daily
- Wash hands before and after application and wear sterile gloves when handling the cream
- Apply a thin, even layer to the affected area, ensuring complete coverage
- Reapply after bathing or if the cream has been removed from the skin
- Dressings may be applied if needed, but the burned area should always be covered with cream
- Continue use until the wound is healed or as instructed by your provider

- Avoid contact with eyes, nose, and mouth
- Use with caution if you have a known sulfa allergy—inform your healthcare provider before use
- May cause mild burning, itching, or discoloration at the application site, which typically resolves on its own
- Rare but serious side effects include signs of allergic reaction, such as rash, swelling, or difficulty breathing. Seek immediate medical attention if these occur
