It is taken as needed, however, it can also be used for other health conditions including high blood pressure, migraine prevention, and specific heart conditions. It is advised to avoid smoking while taking this medication as it may decrease the effectiveness of propranolol.

am 18 years or older
have not had a hypersensitivity reaction to propranolol, other beta blockers (e.g. metoprolol, carvedilol, bisoprolol, atenolol) or any component of the formulation
do not have a history of the following heart conditions; uncompensated heart failure, cardiogenic shock, severe sinus bradycardia, sick sinus syndrome, or vasospastic angina
do not have second- or third-degree heart block, or significant first-degree heart block
understand that the medication must be gradually discontinued, and I cannot stop taking metoprolol abruptly due to the risk of recurring chest pain (angina pectoris) and heart attack (myocardial infarction)
do not have a history of asthma or COPD
do not have hepatic (liver) impairment, renal (kidney) impairment
understand this medication may mask symptoms of diabetes and overactive thyroid disease
am not pregnant or breastfeeding
have already tried the initial dose (propranolol 10 mg) or have been previously prescribed propranolol 20 mg if selecting propranolol 20 mg
