Propecia® Medication Description
Propecia® (finasteride 1 mg) is a prescription medication used to treat male pattern baldness, also known as androgenetic alopecia. It works by inhibiting the enzyme 5-alpha reductase, which converts testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT)—the hormone responsible for shrinking hair follicles and contributing to hair loss. By lowering DHT levels in the scalp, Propecia® can help slow hair loss and, in some cases, promote regrowth.
Propecia® must be taken continuously to maintain its benefits. Most men begin to notice results after 3 months of daily use, with maximum assessment of effectiveness recommended at 12 months. If the medication is discontinued, any gains in hair growth are typically lost within 12 months.
