Progesterone is a female hormone used to help prevent endometrial hyperplasia associated with estrogen therapy. Endometrial hyperplasia is a precancerous condition in which there is an irregular thickening of the uterine lining. This may cause uncomfortable symptoms for women, including heavy menstrual periods, postmenopausal bleeding, and anemia due to the excess bleeding.

Used to lower the chance of endometrial changes after menopause in people who are getting estrogen therapy

Must be 60 years of age or younger or within 10 years of menopause

Must be currently using estrogen therapy and have an intact uterus

May be administered either cyclically (200mg once daily for 12 days each month) or continuously (100mg daily)

am using this treatment as intended for menopause
am currently receiving estrogen therapy and have a uterus
do not have abnormal genital bleeding
do not have a current or history of blood clots, including venous thromboembolism (VTE) or deep vein thrombosis (DVT), or arterial thromboembolic disease such as stroke or heart attack
do not have a history of breast cancer or estrogen dependent tumor
do not have hepatic (liver) impairment or disease
understand this is to be discontinued when estrogen therapy is discontinued
understand, am aware, and am not currently taking nor intend to take this medication with medications being metabolized similarly, including phenobarbital, phenytoin, rifampin, and St. John’s Wort
am not pregnant or breastfeeding
understand this medication may increase the risk of endometrial cancer and/or exacerbate endometriosis, and increase the risk of ovarian cancer and invasive breast cancer
understand this medication may increase risk of DVT, pulmonary embolism, stroke, or myocardial infarction in postmenopausal women
understand this medication may increase the risk of dementia
understand this medication may worsen other disease states or conditions (e.g., depression, cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus)

Progesterone Capsules Medication Description

Progesterone is a naturally occurring female hormone used to help prevent endometrial hyperplasia, a precancerous thickening of the uterine lining, in individuals receiving estrogen therapy after menopause. Estrogen alone can stimulate the uterine lining and increase the risk of abnormal changes. By balancing estrogen’s effects, progesterone helps protect the endometrium, reducing the risk of heavy bleeding, postmenopausal spotting, and related complications such as anemia.

Progesterone capsules are generally prescribed for postmenopausal individuals with an intact uterus who are receiving systemic estrogen therapy. Treatment may be given on a cyclical schedule or as continuous daily therapy, depending on patient needs and provider recommendations.

Usage Instructions

• Take exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider

• May be administered cyclically or continuously

• Swallow capsules whole with a full glass of water, with or without food

• Take at the same time each day to maintain consistent hormone levels

• Follow your provider’s instructions on timing in relation to estrogen therapy

Warnings & Precautions

• For use only in individuals with an intact uterus who are receiving estrogen therapy

• Not intended for use in pregnancy. Inform your provider if you may be pregnant or breastfeeding

• May cause dizziness, headaches, bloating, or breast tenderness

• Use with caution if you have a history of blood clots, liver disease, certain cancers, or cardiovascular disease

• Report any unusual vaginal bleeding promptly, as it may indicate a more serious condition

• Hormone therapy should be used for the shortest duration necessary to meet treatment goals

Progesterone capsules side effects may include sudden severe headache, unusual vaginal bleeding, mental or mood changes, swelling of the hands or feet, breast lumps or yellowing of the eyes or skin.
