Omeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor that is used to treat severe acid reflux that is not adequately treated with other medications. It is typically taken once daily for 14 days and may be continued as recommended by a licensed provider. Duration longer than 14 days should be consulted with a physician.
- Used to treat acid reflux symptoms including heartburn, acid indigestion, and upset stomach occurring more than 2 days per week
- Typical dosing for recurring acid reflux is 20 mg once daily for 14 days, which may be repeated every 4 months as needed
- For severe and frequent symptoms of acid reflux, may continue treatment of 20 mg to 40 mg once daily for at least 8 weeks as directed by a provider
- Recommended to be taken 30 to 60 minutes before meals as a whole capsule or sprinkled onto applesauce
- If symptoms persist after omeprazole use, gradual decrease in dosing and referral to a specialist is recommended
