Omeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor that is used to treat severe acid reflux that is not adequately treated with other medications. It is typically taken once daily for 14 days and may be continued as recommended by a licensed provider. Duration longer than 14 days should be consulted with a physician.

Used to treat acid reflux symptoms including heartburn, acid indigestion, and upset stomach occurring more than 2 days per week

Typical dosing for recurring acid reflux is 20 mg once daily for 14 days, which may be repeated every 4 months as needed

For severe and frequent symptoms of acid reflux, may continue treatment of 20 mg to 40 mg once daily for at least 8 weeks as directed by a provider

Recommended to be taken 30 to 60 minutes before meals as a whole capsule or sprinkled onto applesauce

If symptoms persist after omeprazole use, gradual decrease in dosing and referral to a specialist is recommended

understand omeprazole may cause vitamin B12 deficiency

understand this medication may cause low magnesium levels which can affect the heart and seizure threshold
understand omeprazole does not relief disease from gastric malignancy
understand this is not suitable for individuals with frequent chest pain, wheezing, nausea and vomiting, and unexplained weight loss
understand this medication may cause confusion, agitation, and delirium in older individuals
understand this medication increases the risk of reversible subacute cutaneous lupus erythematosus (SCLE) and reversible gastric polyps

understand this medication increases the risk of infection from Clostridioides difficile (C. diff) and bone fractures
understand this medication increases the risk of acute interstitial nephritis (AIN)
