Norethindrone is a progesterone hormone used to prevent pregnancy in women of childbearing age. It the preferred oral contraceptive in women experiencing migraine with aura or who cannot take estrogen. It must be taken at the same time daily to receive maximal benefit.  

  • Progestin-only hormonal contraception used to prevent pregnancy
  • Must be taken on schedule at the same time each day for maximal effect
  • Contains 28 days of active pills which can be started at any time in the cycle and takes affect after 48 hours
  • Back up methods of contraception must be used within the first 48 hours of starting the medication or for 48 hours if a dose is missed greater than 3 hours late from scheduled time
  • The preferred birth control in women who have migraine with aura or high blood pressure
  • May be taken 3 to 6 weeks after giving birth and is the preferred birth control in women who are breastfeeding
  • Preferred for women over the age of 35 and/or are smokers, with recommendations to quit smoking while taking this medication
