Metronidazole vaginal gel is used for the treatment of bacterial vaginosis, a condition characterized by a thin gray-white discharge with a fishy-smelling odor. Alcohol consumption must be avoided during treatment and for 72 hours after to prevent strong adverse reactions, including severe vomiting, headache, and flushing.
- Used to treat symptomatic bacterial vaginosis with less systemic side effects than oral tablets
- Taken as 1 applicatorful inserted vaginally at bedtime for 5 days
- May also be used for suppressive therapy in patients with multiple recurrences as 1 applicatorful intravaginally at bedtime twice a week for 3 to 6 months
- Must avoid use with vaginal products (e.g., tampons, douches) and do not have vaginal intercourse for the duration of treatment

Side effects may include irritation at the application site, vaginal itching, discharge, pain with intercourse, upset stomach and yeast infection.
