  • Metformin Medication Description

Metformin is an oral antidiabetic prescription medication used to help manage blood sugar levels in individuals with Type 2 diabetes. It is often prescribed in conjunction with lifestyle modifications such as diet, exercise, and weight management. Metformin works by improving insulin sensitivity and decreasing the amount of glucose produced by the liver.

It is considered a first-line treatment for Type 2 diabetes and may be used alone or in combination with other glucose-lowering medications. It has been shown to offer long-term cardiovascular and metabolic benefits and has a low risk of causing hypoglycemia when used by itself based on studies.

How To Use: Metformin should be taken with food to minimize stomach upset. Blood sugar improvements may be noticeable within days, but full effects may take 1–2 weeks or longer. Regular monitoring of blood glucose and HbA1c is recommended.

    Warnings:

Metformin should be used with caution in individuals over 65 or with impaired kidney function. It may cause vitamin B12 deficiency with long-term use, so supplementation and monitoring may be necessary.

  • Metformin Side Effects
