  • Metformin ER Medication Description

Metformin Extended-Release (ER) is a once-daily oral prescription medication used to manage blood glucose levels in individuals with Type 2 diabetes. It works by reducing hepatic glucose production, increasing insulin sensitivity, and improving peripheral glucose uptake. The extended-release formulation offers the benefit of convenient dosing and may help reduce gastrointestinal side effects compared to regular-release metformin.

Metformin ER is often prescribed alongside lifestyle interventions such as diet, exercise, and weight management to help achieve glycemic control. It is also considered a first-line treatment and may be used alone or in combination with other diabetes medications.

How To Use: Tablets must be swallowed whole and should not be split, crushed, or chewed. Improvements in blood glucose may begin within days of starting therapy, though full effects may take 1–2 weeks or longer. Regular blood glucose and HbA1c monitoring is recommended.

    Warnings:

Requires adequate kidney function and should be used cautiously in patients over 65 or those with renal impairment. Routine renal function assessments are recommended. Vitamin B12 levels may decrease with long-term use.

  • Metformin ER Side Effects

Side effects may include diarrhea, which may occur at any time during the treatment but will be tolerated over time and usually stop occurring. Other side effects may include nausea, vomiting, heartburn, and gas.
