Losartan Medication Description
Losartan is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) used to help lower high blood pressure (hypertension). It may be prescribed as a standalone therapy or in combination with other medications when additional blood pressure control is needed. By blocking angiotensin II, a substance that causes blood vessels to constrict, losartan allows vessels to relax and widen, making it easier for blood to flow.
This medication is particularly useful in patients who cannot tolerate ACE inhibitors due to side effects such as a chronic cough. In addition to treating hypertension, losartan may also be used to protect kidney function in patients with type 2 diabetes and reduce the risk of stroke in individuals with left ventricular hypertrophy.
How To Use: Typically taken once daily. Take at the same time each day for best results. Noticeable effects may begin within 1 week; full therapeutic response often observed in 3–6 weeks.
Precautions: May cause dizziness, especially after the first dose or when standing up. Routine monitoring of kidney function and potassium levels may be necessary and is often advised.
