Lidocaine patches belong to a class of medications called local anesthetics, used topically to alleviate pain. Lidocaine 5% patches are used to relieve pain due to postherpetic neuralgia (i.e. nerve and skin pain associated with shingles infection).

Lidocaine patches work to alleviate pain by blocking the nerves from sending pain impulses

Up to 3 patches may be applied topically to most painful area and may remain on the skin for up to 12 hours in a 24-hour period; only recommended for use on intact skin

Patches may be cut with scissors to the size of the affected area

Avoid contact with water such as swimming, bathing or showering as patches may not stick if they get wet

Am 18 years or older
Have not had a hypersensitivity reaction to lidocaine, other local anesthetics of the amide type, or any component of its formulation
Am using this product as indicated for postherpetic neuralgia
Am not pregnant or breastfeeding
Understand lidocaine has a boxed warning for fatal events and seizures in infants and children following topical lidocaine ingestion (including topical oral lidocaine solution). Both used and unused patches may cause toxicities in children and should be stored and disposed of out of reach of children and pets
Do not have a bacterial infection at the site of application, broken or inflamed skin at the site of application, tuberculosis, or fungal lesions of the skin
Do not have a history of familial malignant hyperthermia
Do not have a history of bleeding disorders, severe shock or heart block
Do not have hepatic (liver) impairment
Do not have pseudocholinesterase deficiency
Will avoid use around or in the eyes and mouth
Am not taking any class I antiarrhythmic drugs (e.g., flecainide, propafenone, mexiletine)
Will not use other lidocaine sources or local anesthetic products while using lidocaine patches
Understand that ingestion or absorption of this product can result in rare but serious side effects including methemoglobinemia, acidosis, seizure, and trouble breathing
Will avoid using external heat sources (e.g., heating pad, electric blanket, hot tub) on the application site
Will discontinue use of this product if local sensitivity or infection occurs

Lidocaine Patches Medication Description

Lidocaine patches (5%) are a type of prescription topical local anesthetic used to relieve pain caused by nerve damage in the skin, notably postherpetic neuralgia (shingles-related pain). Each patch delivers lidocaine directly to the affected area, blocking sodium channels in nerve endings and reducing the transmission of pain signals to the brain. This makes lidocaine patches ideal for targeted relief without affecting the rest of the body.

They provide a convenient and non-systemic option for chronic localized pain relief and are typically applied to intact skin over the most painful area.

How To Use:

Typically applied up to 3 patches at once to cover the affected area. Leave on for no more than 12 hours within a 24-hour period. Patches can be trimmed to fit the size and shape of the painful region. Only apply to clean, dry, and unbroken skin. Avoid exposure to water (swimming, bathing) while wearing patches.

Precautions:

Not intended for use on open wounds or irritated skin. Dispose of used patches safely and keep out of reach of children. Do not use more than directed to avoid systemic lidocaine absorption.
