Lidocaine patches belong to a class of medications called local anesthetics, used topically to alleviate pain. Lidocaine 5% patches are used to relieve pain due to postherpetic neuralgia (i.e. nerve and skin pain associated with shingles infection).
- Lidocaine patches work to alleviate pain by blocking the nerves from sending pain impulses
- Up to 3 patches may be applied topically to most painful area and may remain on the skin for up to 12 hours in a 24-hour period; only recommended for use on intact skin
- Patches may be cut with scissors to the size of the affected area
- Avoid contact with water such as swimming, bathing or showering as patches may not stick if they get wet
