Ivermectin - Scabies

Oral ivermectin is used to treat scabies for individuals that have had prolonged skin to skin contact to scabies within the past 6 weeks. It may also be used for scabies infestation for individuals living in the same environment. This formulation may also be used in combination with topical treatments for severe or difficult infestations.

have not had a hypersensitivity reaction to ivermectin or any component of the formulation
am not pregnant or breast feeding
am using oral ivermectin for the treatment of scabies infestation
am not on dialysis or have severe kidney dysfunction
understand oral ivermectin can affect the central nervous and present as side effects including confusion, tremor, impaired consciousness, and breathing difficulties
understand oral ivermectin can cause a delayed hypersensitivity reaction and severe skin reactions such as Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS) and toxic epidermal necrolysis (TENS)

Medication Description

Oral ivermectin is a prescription antiparasitic medication used to treat scabies, a skin infestation caused by mites. This treatment is typically recommended for individuals who have had prolonged skin-to-skin contact with someone infected within the past 6 weeks. It may also be used for people living in the same household or environment as an infected individual, even if they are asymptomatic. Oral ivermectin is particularly effective for cases that do not respond to topical treatments or in situations where combination therapy is necessary due to the severity or spread of infestation.

How To Use: Take the medication orally on an empty stomach with water. The dose is based on body weight and is usually taken once, then repeated in 7 to 14 days. Follow your healthcare provider’s instructions for exact dosing. In difficult or crusted scabies cases, oral ivermectin is often prescribed alongside topical scabicides for improved efficacy.

Precautions: This medication is for oral use only. Notify your provider if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have a history of liver disease. Proper hygiene and environmental decontamination are essential to prevent reinfestation. All close contacts should be evaluated and treated if necessary.
Side Effects

Side effects may include itching or skin irritation. Severe side effects may include dizziness or fever.
