Hydroxyzine is an antihistamine used to relieve itching caused by allergic skin conditions such as atopic dermatitis (eczema), contact dermatitis and hives. Due to its effects on certain receptors in the brain, it may also be used to treat anxiety and tension. It is taken as needed and is for short-term use (less than 4 months) since tolerance develops over time and may decrease effectiveness of hydroxyzine.

Am between the age of 18 and 64 years old
Have not had a hypersensitivity reaction to hydroxyzine, cetirizine, levocetirizine or any component of the formulation
Am using this as indicated for itching caused by allergic skin conditions or to treat anxiety or tension
Understand this medication may cause drowsiness and dizziness that may persist into the following morning and impair my alertness or ability to drive or operate heavy machinery
Am not pregnant or breastfeeding
Understand this medication is not suitable for age 65 years and older due to additive anticholinergic effects which may result in dry mouth, blurred vision, urinary retention, constipation and altered mental state
Do not have a history of prolonged QT interval on ECG or torsades de pointes (TdP)
Do not have a history of narrow-angle glaucoma
Do not have a history of prostatic hyperplasia (enlarged prostate) and/or urinary stricture
Do not have hepatic (liver) or renal (kidney) impairment
Do not have a history of respiratory disease such as asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
Do not take any other CNS depressants (e.g., opioids, sedatives, alcohol). I understand that taking hydroxyzine with other medications that cause drowsiness may cause over sedation and increase risk for falls and altered mental state (confusion)

Medication Description

Hydroxyzine is a prescription antihistamine used to treat itching and irritation caused by allergic skin conditions like eczema, hives, and contact dermatitis. In addition to its antihistamine effects, hydroxyzine interacts with receptors in the brain to reduce anxiety, tension, and occasional insomnia. This dual action makes it a useful short-term treatment for both skin and mental health symptoms.

Hydroxyzine is usually taken at a dose of 25 mg up to 3 to 4 times per day, with or without food, based on individual needs. It is commonly prescribed for short-term use (typically less than 4 months), as tolerance may develop over time, reducing its effectiveness.

Side Effects
