Hydrochlorothiazide is a medication used to help lower blood pressure and reduce fluid retention in the body.  

  • Used to lower blood pressure by increasing the output of water and electrolytes, including sodium, chloride, and potassium
  • Can also be used to treat swelling from fluid retention
  • Initial dosing starts at 12.5 mg to 25 mg once daily with a typical maintenance dose of 25 mg once daily
  • Individuals 65 years and older typically continue 12.5 mg daily, and must be monitored for low electrolyte levels
  • May be taken with or without food, and recommended to take in the morning
  • Suitable for individuals already taking this medication

  • Side Effects

    Side effects may include dizziness, headache, upset stomach, decreased appetite, light sensitivity, and stomach cramps. This medication may interact with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen, naproxen, and aspirin. Avoid using NSAIDs in combination with hydrochlorothiazide as it may decrease its effectiveness.
