Glipizide is a medication used to help lower blood sugar for Type 2 diabetes. It is typically used as an add-on agent with other medications for diabetes, in addition to lifestyle intervention of diet and exercise.

Used as an add-on treatment to lower blood sugar for patients with Type 2 diabetes

Can also be used as a single therapy for diabetes if other medications are not tolerated

Initial dosing 2.5 mg to 5 mg with the first meal of the day

Typical maintenance dose of 5 mg daily

Not suitable with a known allergy to sulfur containing medications or patients 65 years and older

have not had bariatric surgery
understand the risk of low blood sugar and dizziness
understand this medication may interact with medications being metabolized similarly or that share similar side effects, including fluconazole, voriconazole, sulfonamides, probenecid, beta blockers, and salicylates
do not have a glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency
do not have a history of liver (hepatic) or kidney (renal) impairment
am not pregnant or breastfeeding
