Medication Description

Furosemide is a loop diuretic used to reduce fluid retention (edema) caused by conditions such as heart failure, liver disease, and kidney disorders. It also helps lower high blood pressure (hypertension) by decreasing excess fluid volume in the body. This medication works by helping the kidneys remove sodium and water through increased urine output.

Initial dosing usually ranges from 20 mg to 40 mg once daily, but it may be adjusted depending on the severity of fluid retention and individual response. Furosemide can be taken with or without food, but morning use is often recommended to minimize nighttime trips to the bathroom.

Side Effects

Side effects may include dizziness, headache, upset stomach, decreased appetite, light sensitivity, and stomach cramps. This medication may interact with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen, naproxen, and aspirin. Avoid using NSAIDs in combination with furosemide as it may decrease its effectiveness.
