Famotidine is used to treat symptoms of acid reflux including heartburn, indigestion, and sour stomach. It is typically taken once to twice daily scheduled or on an as needed basis.

Used to treat acid reflux symptoms including heartburn, acid indigestion, and upset stomach

Typical dosing for recurring acid reflux is 20 mg once daily 10 to 60 minutes before an acid inducing meal

Maximum dose of 40 mg once daily

If symptoms persist after 2 to 4 weeks of therapy, consider switching to omeprazole

May also be used in combination with omeprazole once daily as needed or on schedule

In individuals with poor kidney function, famotidine should be taken every other day at the lowest dose

understand this medication may cause confusion, agitation, and delirium in older individuals
understand this medication rarely causes increased bleeding due to low platelet count (thrombocytopenia)
