Ezetimibe is a medication that helps lower cholesterol by preventing the absorption of cholesterol through the digestive tract into the body. Ezetimibe can be used alone or in combination with a statin.

do not active liver failure or persistent elevations in liver enzymes
am not pregnant or breastfeeding
understand this medication may interact with medications being metabolized similarly, including cyclosporine, warfarin, bile acid sequestrants, and leflunomide
have a diagnosis of high cholesterol and have already been taking ezetimibe as prescribed by an authorized healthcare provider
do not have liver (hepatic) impairment (Child-Pugh class A-C) or severe renal impairment (CrCl <30 mL/min)
understand when used with a statin, it increases the risk of muscle weakness, including myalgia, myopathy, and rhabdomyolysis. If muscle pain or severe weakness occurs, I will discontinue the medications and seek medical attention immediately.

Medication Description

Ezetimibe is a cholesterol-lowering medication that works by blocking the absorption of cholesterol in the digestive tract, helping reduce total and LDL cholesterol levels. It is often prescribed to patients who either cannot tolerate statins or need additional lipid-lowering support beyond what statins alone can provide.

Ezetimibe is commonly used:

As monotherapy in patients who are statin-intolerant

In combination with statins or fenofibrate for enhanced cholesterol control

How To Use:

Usually taken once daily

Can be taken with statins or fenofibrate at the same time

Must be separated from bile acid-binding medications (cholestyramine) by at least 2–4 hours

Warnings:

Not a substitute for diet, exercise, and lifestyle changes

Use with caution in patients with liver disease when combined with statins

Periodic monitoring of cholesterol levels is recommended
Side Effects

Side effects include joint pain, diarrhea, loss of strength and energy, and muscle weakness.
