Medication Description
Estradiol transdermal patches deliver systemic estrogen therapy through the skin to help manage moderate to severe symptoms of menopause, such as vaginal dryness, burning, and painful intercourse. These patches are FDA-approved to treat vulvar and vaginal atrophy (atrophic vaginitis), a condition resulting from decreased estrogen levels that causes thinning and inflammation of the vaginal tissues.
As a transdermal delivery method, these patches provide continuous estrogen exposure with steady absorption and may offer an alternative to oral hormone therapy. Estradiol patches are generally recommended for women within 10 years of menopause or under the age of 60.
How to Use:
Apply to clean, dry, intact skin on the lower abdomen or buttocks
Do not apply to the breasts or areas of irritated skin
Rotate application sites with each patch change to avoid skin irritation
Typical dosing ranges from 0.025 mg/24hr to 0.1 mg/24hr
Frequency of patch change varies by brand—follow provider instructions
Warnings:
Use the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration consistent with treatment goals as directed by your provider
May increase the risk of blood clots, stroke, or certain cancers—routine monitoring is advised
