Colchicine is a medication primarily used to treat and prevent gout attacks by reducing inflammation. Gout typically presents with sudden symptoms affecting one or a few joints, most commonly the big toe, knee, or ankle. It is caused by excess uric acid in the blood, which can lead to the formation of hard crystals in the joints. Colchicine helps by reducing swelling and preventing the buildup of these uric acid crystals, easing the pain in the affected joints.

Am 18 years or older
Am not taking colchicine as a preventative treatment for gout
Am not currently, or within the last 7 days, have taken colchicine daily for prevention of gout flare ups
Have already taken this medication solely for the treatment of acute gout flare ups
Understand that this medication should only be taken for up to 4 days for treatment of acute gout flare up and that I should switch to an alternative anti-inflammatory medication if symptoms are not resolved within 4 days of taking colchicine
Do not have a history of kidney or liver impairment
Understand that Colchicine has a narrow therapeutic index, meaning drug accumulation can be associated with severe, including fatal, consequences.
Understand monitoring is required for signs/symptoms of colchicine toxicity and factors contributing to accumulation (eg, hepatic/renal impairment, drug interactions)
Am not on hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis
Do not have a history of blood dyscrasias or neuromuscular toxicity
Will avoid grapefruit juice while taking this medication due to the risk of food - drug interactions
Have not had a hypersensitivity to colchicine or any component of the formulation (More information about formulation components can be found at www.drugs.com)
Am not pregnant or breastfeeding
Understand monitoring parameters include CBC blood work, renal and hepatic function tests, signs/symptoms of colchicine toxicity that include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain
Understand early symptoms of colchicine usually begin with gastrointestinal issues such as severe diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and I will discontinue this medication immediately upon experiencing any of these symptoms.

Medication Description
Colchicine is an oral anti-inflammatory medication primarily used to treat and prevent acute gout attacks. Gout is a form of arthritis caused by the buildup of uric acid crystals in the joints, often resulting in sudden, severe pain and swelling in one or a few joints—most commonly the big toe, ankle, or knee.

Colchicine works by interrupting the inflammatory response to these uric acid crystals, thereby relieving pain and reducing swelling. It is also used as a preventive treatment in individuals with frequent flare-ups and may be prescribed long-term to reduce the recurrence of symptoms.

In addition to its use in gout, colchicine is prescribed off-label for conditions like recurrent pericarditis—an inflammation of the sac surrounding the heart—due to its ability to modulate the body’s inflammatory pathways.

How to Use:
- Take exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider
- Often initiated at the first sign of a flare; dosage varies based on use for treatment or prevention
- Do not exceed the recommended dose to avoid toxicity
Warnings:
- Colchicine has a narrow therapeutic index; even slight overdoses can be dangerous
- Avoid grapefruit juice, which can increase colchicine levels and the risk of side effects
- Not recommended for patients with severe renal or hepatic impairment unless adjusted by a provider
Side Effects

Colchicine side effects may include: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, myalgia, rash, numbness or tingling, fatigue, neuropathy, shortness of breath, dark urine, cramps, stomach pain.
