Ciclopirox nail lacquer is a topical antifungal treatment for mild to moderate onychomycosis (i.e. fungus of the fingernails and toenails) involving ≤50% of the nail.

Ciclopirox nail lacquer is used to treat fungal infection of the nails by stopping the growth of fungus

Applied to affected nails and surrounding skin once a day then removed with alcohol every 7 days until cleared (max 48 weeks)

After removal with alcohol, weekly nail trimmings are recommended for best results

Have not had a hypersensitivity reaction to ciclopirox or any component of the formulation
Am using this as indicated for treatment of mild to moderate onychomycosis for treatment duration up to 48 weeks
Will use this product for external use only, avoiding eyes, mouth, vaginal and rectal use
Will avoid occlusive dressings or wrappings around the area being treated
Will discontinue use if sensitivity or irritation occurs
Understand that ciclopirox is only a component of a comprehensive management program including weekly nail trimming and periodic nail debridement
Do not have a history of type 1 diabetes mellitus (insulin dependent) or diabetic neuropathy
Do not have a history of being immunocompromised or immunosuppressed

Medication Description

Ciclopirox nail lacquer is a prescription topical antifungal medication used to treat mild to moderate onychomycosis, a fungal infection of the fingernails or toenails that involves 50% or less of the nail without affecting the lunula (half-moon area). It works by inhibiting the growth of fungus, restoring healthier nail appearance over time.

This treatment is often preferred for patients who cannot take oral antifungal medications due to liver concerns or other medical conditions.

How to Use:

Under the discretion of a provider, this medication is typically applied once daily to the affected nail(s), surrounding skin, and under the nail edge if possible

Every 7 days, remove the lacquer with alcohol and trim the nail

Application is repeated until fungal infection clears or up to 48 weeks

Additional Notes:

Perform weekly nail trimming to improve efficacy

Avoid nail polish or other cosmetic nail products during treatment

Keep nails clean and dry to minimize fungal growth

For optimal results, use consistently as directed and maintain proper nail hygiene throughout the treatment period.
Side Effects

Side effects may include local application site reactions including burning, itching, swelling and nail discoloration.
