am 18 years or older
have not had a hypersensitivity reaction to bupropion or any component of the formulation
do not have current or history of anorexia or bulimia
do not have a seizure disorder
have not abruptly discontinued use of alcohol, benzodiazepines (e.g. lorazepam, diazepam, alprazolam), barbiturates (e.g. phenobarbital, primidone), or antiseizure drugs (e.g. levetiracetam [Keppra], valproic acid, divalproex [Depakote], carbamazepine [Carbatrol])
do not take a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) such as isocarboxazid, phenelzine, tranylcypromine, or selegiline currently or within the past 14 days
am not receiving linezolid, intravenous methylene blue, or pimozide
do not have a history of liver (hepatic) or kidney (renal) impairment
do not have a history of cardiovascular disease or arrhythmia
am not pregnant or breastfeeding
understand antidepressants increase the risk of suicidal thought and behaviors in pediatric and young adults
have already been taking the initial dose (bupropion XL 150 mg) or have been previously prescribed bupropion XL 300 mg
if selecting bupropion XL 300 mg understand abrupt discontinuation of this medication may cause withdrawal symptoms including physical (e.g. dizziness, chill, headache) and psychological (e.g. anxiety, irritability) symptoms.

Medication Description

Bupropion is an oral antidepressant classified as a dopamine and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (DNRI). It is FDA-approved to treat major depressive disorder (MDD) and seasonal affective disorder (SAD).

Bupropion works by restoring the balance of dopamine and norepinephrine, two key neurotransmitters that affect mood, energy levels, and emotional well-being.

Often selected as an alternative for individuals experiencing sexual dysfunction or weight gain from other antidepressants such as SSRIs.

How to Use:

Dosing is typically between 150 mg to 300 mg per day

Should be taken at the same time each day, with or without food

Important: Bupropion should not be used in individuals with a history of seizures, eating disorders, or abrupt alcohol/benzodiazepine withdrawal due to increased seizure risk.

May take several weeks to show full effect

Patients should be monitored for changes in mood, behavior, or suicidal thoughts, especially when starting or adjusting the dose
Side Effects

Side effects may include dry mouth, sore throat, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, and weight loss.
