Azithromycin is an oral antibiotic commonly prescribed for the treatment of traveler’s diarrhea, especially in cases caused by bacterial pathogens such as Escherichia coli (ETEC and EAEC). It is often preferred for travelers heading to high-risk regions where food and water contamination is common.
Azithromycin is considered an appropriate option in regions where resistance to fluoroquinolones is common. Traveler’s diarrhea affects 30–70% of travelers, depending on factors such as location, season, and length of stay.
