do not have second- or third-degree heart block, or significant first-degree heart block
understand beta-blocker therapy, such as atenolol, should not be withdrawn abruptly, but gradually tapered to avoid severe exacerbation of chest pain, the occurrence of heart attack, ventricular arrhythmias, acute tachycardia, high blood pressure, and/or ischemia in patients with underlying cardiovascular disease.
do not have hepatic (liver) impairment, renal (kidney) impairment
am not pregnant or breastfeeding
have already been taking the initial dose (atenolol 25 mg) or have been previously prescribed atenolol 50 mg or atenolol 100 mg, if selecting atenolol 50 mg or atenolol 100 mg
understand atenolol may aggravate the following medical conditions and thus must be used with caution or avoided: asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), diabetes, myasthenia gravis, peripheral vascular disease, untreated pheochromocytoma, psoriasis, renal impairment, thyroid disease, vasospastic angina
understand beta-blockers may cause bradycardia or first, second, or third-degree atrioventricular (AV) heart block.
Understand beta-blockers may cause reversible CNS effects such as fatigue, insomnia, vivid dreams, memory impairment, and sexual disorder
Understand beta-blockers may worsen, prolong, or cause hypoglycemia (ie, low blood sugar). Additionally, beta-blockers may mask symptoms of hypoglycemia (tremor, irritability, palpitations), making diaphoresis (ie, excessive sweating) the only symptom unaffected by beta-blockers.
Will not take nor intend to take the following concurrently with atenolol due to severe or major drug-drug interactions: alpha-2 agonists, amifostine, bromperidol, ceritinib, dronedarone, etofylline, fexinidazole, fingolimod, grass pollen allergen extract, isocarboxazid, Obinutuzumab, ponesimod, rivastigmine, Siponimod, tasimelteon, white birch allergen extract
Understand concurrent use of atenolol with amiodarone, digoxin, or verapamil may cause heart block, bradycardia, and/or left ventricular dysfunction

Medication Description

Atenolol is a beta-blocker used to manage high blood pressure (hypertension), chronic stable angina (chest pain), and to help prevent recurrent heart attacks in patients with a history of myocardial infarction. It works by blocking beta-adrenergic receptors in the heart, which slows heart rate and reduces the heart’s workload, allowing blood to pump more efficiently.

Approved Uses:

Hypertension: To lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of stroke and heart attack

Stable Angina: To reduce the frequency and severity of chest pain

Post-Heart Attack: To lower the likelihood of additional cardiac events

How to Use:

Usually dosed starting at 25 to 50 mg once or twice daily

Can be taken with or without food

Take at the same time each day to maintain consistent levels
