Acarbose Tablets
Generic For Precose®
starting at $32.99

Acarbose tablets are an oral medication used to manage type 2 diabetes by lowering blood sugar levels after meals. Acarbose works by inhibiting enzymes in the small intestine that break down complex carbohydrates into simple sugars, which slows glucose absorption. By delaying carbohydrate digestion, acarbose helps prevent spikes in blood glucose levels following meals. It is most effective when taken with the first bite of each main meal and is typically used alongside diet and exercise or in combination with other diabetes medications.

  • Acarbose Tablets Side Effects

Acarbose side effects are primarily related to its impact on the digestive system and may include gas, abdominal bloating, stomach cramps, and diarrhea, which result from the fermentation of undigested carbohydrates in the colon. These symptoms are generally mild and tend to decrease as the body adjusts to the medication. Less commonly, acarbose can lead to elevated liver enzymes, so periodic liver function tests may be recommended during treatment. Although acarbose does not usually cause low blood sugar when used alone, the risk increases when combined with other diabetes medications such as insulin or sulfonylureas. In the event of hypoglycemia, it is important to use glucose (dextrose) rather than table sugar, as acarbose can interfere with the digestion of sucrose. Rare but serious side effects, such as intestinal blockage or severe abdominal pain, require immediate medical attention.
