Telmisartan is a medication used to lower blood pressure. It can be used alone or in combination with other medications that lower blood pressure to produce optimal outcomes.

Telmisartan is used to treat high blood pressure either alone or as add-on therapy to other medications that reduce blood pressure

Starting dose is typically 20 mg to 40 mg once daily, and may be increased up to 80 mg as needed for blood pressure control as a maintenance dose

May be preferred if individuals experience a drug-induced cough from other blood pressure medications, including lisinopril

Suitable for patients already taking this medication

Offers cardiovascular risk reduction in patients 55 years of age unable to take ACE inhibitors (eg, lisinopril) and who are high risk of major cardiovascular events (eg, heart attack, stroke)

have not had a hypersensitivity reaction to telmisartan or any component of the formulation

have a diagnosis of high blood pressure and have already been taking telmisartan as prescribed by an authorized healthcare provider
Am taking telmisartan as prescribed for my own personal use

Do not take, nor intend to take, aliskiren concurrently with telmisartan
do not have hepatic (liver) impairment, renal (kidney) impairment
am not pregnant or breastfeeding and understand taking telmisartan while pregnant may cause injury and/or death to the developing fetus
have already been taking the initial dose (telmisartan 20 mg) or have been previously prescribed telmisartan 40 mg or telmisartan 80 mg, if selecting telmisartan 40 mg or telmisartan 80 mg
understand this medication may cause angioedema, which is characterized by sudden swelling in areas under the skin and throat closure. I will discontinue this medication and seek medical attention immediately if angioedema occurs.
do not have the following conditions: aortic or mitral stenosis, ascites, or renal artery stenosis
understand this medication may cause acute kidney injury and high potassium levels
Will not take nor intend to take the following concurrently with telmisartan due to severe or major drug-drug interactions: aliskiren, amifostine, angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors, bromperidol, isocarboxazid, lithium, Obinutuzumab, patiromer, ramipril, sparsentan

Telmisartan potential side effects may include: dizziness, diarrhea, back pain, nasal congestion, and high potassium levels. Avoid excessive consumption of potassium containing foods, potassium supplements, and salt substitutes with potassium.
