Benazepril is a prescription medication classified as an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor. It is primarily used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) and heart failure, helping to reduce the risk of stroke, heart attack, and kidney damage.
It works by blocking the conversion of angiotensin I to angiotensin II, a chemical that causes blood vessels to narrow. By inhibiting this conversion, Benazepril relaxes and widens blood vessels, lowers blood pressure, and reduces the workload on the heart.
Benazepril also plays a role in protecting kidney function, particularly in patients with chronic kidney disease, by decreasing protein loss in the urine (proteinuria). This can slow the progression of kidney damage over time.
