Bisoprolol is a beta-1 selective beta-blocker used to treat several cardiovascular conditions. It is commonly prescribed to help manage high blood pressure (hypertension) and is often part of a broader treatment plan that may include diet, exercise, and other medications.
Bisoprolol works by blocking beta-1 adrenergic receptors, which slows the heart rate, reduces the heart’s workload, and allows the heart to pump more efficiently. This leads to lower blood pressure, decreased risk of heart-related events, and improved oxygen delivery to the heart muscle.
How to Use:
Typical dosage is to take 1 tablet once daily in the morning
May be taken with or without food
Dosage is individualized and typically starts low and is titrated up
Important: Do not abruptly stop taking bisoprolol unless directed by your healthcare provider— the dose is often tapered gradually to prevent rebound effects such as increased heart rate, blood pressure, or risk of cardiac events.
Regular monitoring of heart rate, blood pressure, and kidney function is recommended
Often used in combination with ACE inhibitors, diuretics, or other heart medications
Not considered first-line therapy for hypertension unless combined with other treatments
