Torsemide is a prescription loop diuretic, sometimes called a water pill, used to help the body remove extra fluid and salt. It may be used for fluid retention related to heart failure, kidney disease, or liver disease, and it may also be used to treat high blood pressure. By helping the kidneys make more urine, torsemide can reduce swelling and lower fluid buildup.
How to Use:
Take torsemide exactly as directed, usually at the same time each day. Many people take it in the morning or early afternoon to reduce nighttime urination. Your provider may monitor blood pressure, weight, kidney function, and electrolyte levels while you take it.
Warnings & Precautions:
Torsemide can cause dehydration, dizziness, and low electrolyte levels such as potassium, sodium, or magnesium. Tell your prescribing provider about kidney or liver disease, gout, hearing problems, sulfa allergies, pregnancy, breastfeeding, and medications such as lithium, NSAIDs, digoxin, blood pressure medicines, or certain antibiotics.
Side effects may include dizziness, headache, upset stomach, decreased appetite, light sensitivity, and stomach cramps. This medication may interact with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen, naproxen, and aspirin. Avoid using NSAIDs in combination with torsemide as it may decrease its effectiveness.
