Carvedilol is a beta-blocker used to treat high blood pressure and to treat heart failure.
- Used to treat high blood pressure either alone or as add-on therapy to other medications that reduce blood pressure
- Starting dose for blood pressure is typically 6.25 mg twice daily and may be increased up to 25 mg twice daily as needed for blood pressure control as a maintenance dose; maximum dose is 50 mg/day
- Starting dose for heart failure is typically 3.125 mg twice daily and may be increased up to a patient’s target dose of either 25 mg twice daily (85 kg) or 50 mg twice daily (>85 kg)
- Take with food to minimize risk of orthostatic hypotension (ie, condition causing blood pressure to drop when standing up or sitting down)
- Suitable for patients already taking this medication
