Zafirlukast is used for the chronic treatment of asthma when other agents have failed to control persistent asthma alone. This medication is suitable for individuals that have already been taking zafirlukast as prescribed by an authorized healthcare provider.  

  • Used as a maintenance therapy for persistent asthma that cannot be controlled with an inhaled corticosteroid
  • Works by decreasing inflammation in the airways, making it easier to breathe
  • To be taken on an empty stomach either 1 hour before or 2 hours after meals
  • Must be taken as prescribed for at least 1 to 2 months before assessing efficacy

  • Zafirlukast Side Effects

    Zafirlukast side effects may include: headache, dizziness, abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, dyspepsia, back pain, weakness, depression, insomnia, abnormal dreams, hallucinations, elevation in liver enzymes; respiratory tract infection in patients >55 years old with coadministration of inhaled corticosteroids.
