Levalbuterol HFA inhaler (Xopenex) is a bronchodilator used to treat or prevent bronchospasm in people with reversible obstructive airway diseases, such as asthma. It works by relaxing the muscles in the airways, allowing for easier breathing during asthma attacks or in cases of exercise-induced bronchospasm. Xopenex is typically used on an as-needed basis for rapid relief of symptoms.
- Xopenex HFA contains levalbuterol, the R-enantiomer of albuterol, which is considered to have fewer side effects
- It is primarily used to treat bronchospasm in people with asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
- Levalbuterol begins working within minutes, providing fast relief from asthma symptoms
- Compared to albuterol, levalbuterol may be less likely to cause rapid heart rate (tachycardia) as a side effect
- The inhaler must be primed with 4 sprays away from the body before the first use or if not used for more than two weeks
