Levalbuterol HFA inhaler (brand name Xopenex) is a short-acting bronchodilator used to prevent and treat bronchospasm in individuals with asthma or other reversible obstructive airway conditions. It can be used prior to physical activity to prevent exercise-induced bronchospasm (EIB), a common asthma trigger.
This inhaler contains levalbuterol, the R-enantiomer of albuterol, which is thought to produce similar therapeutic effects with fewer anticipated side effects, such as rapid heartbeat. Levalbuterol works by relaxing the muscles in the airways, promoting quick and effective breathing relief. It is typically administered 15 to 30 minutes before exercise or strenuous activity to help ensure uninterrupted performance and comfort.
How To Use: Commonly used 15–30 minutes before physical exertion; frequency and dose should follow your provider’s instructions. Inhaler should be primed with 4 sprays away from the face before first use or if unused for more than two weeks. Typically begins working within minutes when inhaled properly, providing rapid symptom control.
Precautions:
-
Do not exceed recommended use—frequent need may signal worsening asthma
-
Not a substitute for long-term control medications
-
Notify your provider if side effects such as tremors or elevated heart rate occur
