Drysol®

Drysol® contains aluminum chloride, a strong antiperspirant ingredient that works by plugging the sweat gland ducts in the top layer of the skin. This helps significantly reduce sweating in commonly affected areas such as the underarms, hands, feet, and sometimes the scalp. While the exact mechanism isn’t fully understood, the aluminum salts react with the proteins in the sweat gland ducts, forming a temporary “plug” that decreases sweat production until the skin naturally sheds. This medication is typically applied at bedtime to completely dry skin and washed off in the morning. Because moisture increases the chance of irritation, applying Drysol® to bone dry skin is important. Most patients start with nightly use until sweating improves, then reduce application to one or two times weekly for maintenance. Counseling points include avoiding use on broken or recently shaved skin, applying less frequently if irritation occurs, and being patient, a few weeks of consistent use may be needed before full benefit is seen.
