Jardiance® contains empagliflozin, a prescription SGLT2 inhibitor used with diet and exercise to help improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes. It may also be prescribed for certain heart failure or kidney-related indications. It works by helping the kidneys remove extra glucose through urine.
How to Use:
Take Jardiance® exactly as prescribed, usually once daily in the morning, with or without food. Stay hydrated and follow your provider's instructions for blood sugar monitoring, diet, and activity. Your provider may check kidney function before and during treatment.
Warnings & Precautions:
Tell your prescribing provider if you have kidney disease, frequent urinary tract or yeast infections, dehydration, low blood pressure, ketoacidosis, pregnancy, breastfeeding, or if you take diuretics or insulin. Seek help for symptoms of ketoacidosis, severe infection, allergic reaction, or genital pain with fever.
Jardiance side effects may include the following: increased urination, urinary tract infections, and genital yeast infections, which are more common due to the medication’s mechanism of increasing glucose excretion in urine. Some patients may also experience thirst, dehydration, low blood pressure (especially when combined with diuretics), or dizziness. Rare but serious side effects include diabetic ketoacidosis (even with normal blood sugar levels), kidney injury, and serious genital infections such as Fournier’s gangrene. Additionally, there may be an increased risk of hypoglycemia when used with insulin or sulfonylureas. Patients with existing kidney problems or those prone to dehydration should be monitored closely.
