Dapsone is part of the sulfone class of antibiotics, which are structurally and functionally different from more common acne treatments such as retinoids, benzoyl peroxide, and topical clindamycin. This distinction makes dapsone a suitable alternative for patients who cannot tolerate those therapies or for whom other treatments have failed.
The 5% formulation is typically applied twice daily, while the 7.5% strength is often used once daily. It is applied directly to clean, dry skin on the affected areas.
