Retin-A® cream (tretinoin) is a prescription topical medication in the retinoid class, commonly prescribed for the treatment of acne. It works by increasing skin cell turnover, which helps prevent clogged pores, reduce the formation of new acne lesions, and improve overall skin texture. Over time, Retin-A may also help reduce the appearance of dark spots and fine lines caused by sun damage, though its primary FDA-approved indication is acne treatment.
Because Retin-A promotes faster renewal of skin cells, some patients experience redness, dryness, or peeling during the first weeks of therapy. Consistent use as prescribed is important to achieve the best results.
How to Use:
Typically prescribed for once-daily application at bedtime, or as directed by your healthcare provider.
Gently cleanse the skin and allow it to dry completely before applying a thin layer of cream to affected areas.
Avoid applying near the eyes, mouth, or corners of the nose unless directed.
Use only the amount prescribed; applying more does not speed results and may increase irritation.
Noticeable improvement often takes several weeks to months of regular use.
Important Notes and Warnings:
Common side effects include redness, dryness, peeling, burning, or stinging where the cream is applied.
Skin treated with Retin-A is more sensitive to sunlight and other skin products; daily sunscreen use and protective clothing are strongly recommended.
Avoid waxing, abrasive cleansers, or harsh chemical treatments on treated areas.
Retin-A should not be used during pregnancy; discontinue use if pregnancy occurs.
Inform your healthcare provider about all other topical or oral medications you are using, as some may increase irritation or reduce effectiveness.
Patience is important: results are gradual, and initial irritation does not mean the medication is ineffective.
Side effects may include dry skin, itching, burning, and sun sensitivity. This product must not be applied to sunburned skin and must be avoided with alcohol, astringents, spices, and citrus peels (e.g. lime).
