Sumatriptan is a prescription medication used for the acute treatment of migraine headaches with or without aura. It belongs to a class of drugs called triptans, which work by narrowing widened blood vessels in the brain and blocking pain signals, helping relieve headache pain and associated symptoms such as nausea, light sensitivity, and sound sensitivity.
Sumatriptan is intended for use at the first sign of migraine symptoms and is not for the prevention of migraines or for the treatment of chronic daily headaches.
Usage Instructions:
Typically prescribed to be taken at the first sign of a migraine or when migraine pain begins
May be taken with or without food
If symptoms return or do not fully resolve, a second dose may be taken at least 2 hours after the first
Do not exceed 100 mg per dose or 200 mg total in a 24-hour period
Not intended for use on more than 10 days per month to avoid medication overuse headaches
Warnings & Precautions:
Not suitable for individuals at risk for coronary artery disease without prior evaluation by a healthcare provider
Avoid use if you have uncontrolled high blood pressure, certain heart rhythm disorders, or a history of stroke
Possible side effects include dizziness, flushing, tingling, fatigue, or drowsiness
Rare but serious side effects include chest pain, shortness of breath, vision changes, or severe allergic reactions—seek medical attention if these occur
Do not take other triptans or ergotamine-containing medications within 24 hours of sumatriptan use
Not recommended for individuals 65 years and older unless specifically approved by a provider
