Prescription-strength ibuprofen is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used to treat moderate pain or inflammation caused by conditions such as arthritis, migraines, menstrual cramps, and general muscle or joint pain. It works by blocking substances in the body that cause inflammation and pain.
Unlike over-the-counter (OTC) versions, prescription ibuprofen is formulated at higher doses, offering potential relief with fewer pills. It is typically taken every 8 hours as needed. To minimize the risk of stomach irritation or upset, it is best taken with food.
Ibuprofen should not be used for more than 10 consecutive days unless under medical supervision, as long-term use can increase the risk of gastrointestinal bleeding, kidney issues, or cardiovascular side effects.
