Albendazole is an oral antiparasitic medication used to treat infections caused by intestinal worms such as pinworm, roundworm, hookworm, and tapeworm. It belongs to the benzimidazole class of anthelmintics and works by inhibiting the parasite’s ability to absorb glucose, which causes energy depletion and leads to the parasite’s death.
Common Use:
For pinworm infections, a typical regimen may include a single 400 mg dose, followed by a repeat dose in two weeks if advised by a healthcare provider.
Albendazole should be taken with food, ideally a high-fat meal, to improve absorption and effectiveness.
Household Precautions:
In cases of pinworm, household members may be evaluated for treatment to prevent reinfection, even if they are not showing symptoms.
Good hygiene practices, such as frequent handwashing and washing bedding and clothing, may help reduce the risk of reinfection during treatment.
Albendazole is available only by prescription and should be used as directed by a healthcare provider.
