Permethrin topical cream (Elimite®) is a prescription medication commonly prescribed for the treatment of scabies, a skin infestation caused by tiny mites. It belongs to a class of medications known as synthetic pyrethroids, which work by paralyzing and killing the mites and their eggs. Permethrin cream is generally well tolerated and is effective after a single application in many cases, though follow-up treatment may sometimes be required.
Patients with scabies often experience intense itching, which may continue for several weeks after treatment as the skin recovers, even if the mites are eliminated.
How to Use:
Typically prescribed as a single full-body application from the neck down, left on the skin for 8 to 14 hours, then washed off thoroughly.
In infants and young children, the cream may also be applied to the scalp, hairline, temples, and forehead as directed by a healthcare provider.
A second application may be prescribed 7 to 14 days later if live mites are still present or symptoms persist.
Apply only to clean, dry skin. Avoid contact with the eyes, mouth, or mucous membranes.
Fingernails and toenails should be treated, and cream may be massaged under the nails using a soft brush if needed.
Bedding, clothing, and towels used during treatment should be washed in hot water and dried on a hot cycle to prevent reinfestation.

Common side effects may include mild burning, stinging, redness, or itching at the site of application, which usually improves with time.
Rarely, allergic reactions such as rash or swelling may occur. Patients should discontinue use and seek medical care if severe reactions develop.
