Triamterene / Hydrochlorothiazide
Generic For Maxzide®
starting at $29.99

Triamterene/hydrochlorothiazide is a combination diuretic (water pill) used to treat high blood pressure and fluid retention (edema). It combines two medications: hydrochlorothiazide, a thiazide diuretic that helps the body get rid of excess salt and water, and triamterene, a potassium-sparing diuretic that helps the body retain potassium. Together, they promote the elimination of excess fluid while minimizing the risk of low potassium levels, a common side effect of diuretics. By reducing fluid buildup and lowering blood pressure, this medication helps decrease the risk of heart attacks, strokes, and kidney problems.

  • Triamterene / Hydrochlorothiazide Side Effects

Triamterene/hydrochlorothiazide side effects may include the following: dizziness, headache, increased urination, and dehydration, especially during the first few days of treatment. Some people may experience nausea, stomach upset, or muscle cramps. Because triamterene helps retain potassium, there is a risk of high potassium levels (hyperkalemia), which can cause weakness, irregular heartbeat, or tingling sensations. Conversely, hydrochlorothiazide can lead to low sodium or magnesium levels. More serious but less common side effects include kidney problems, pancreatitis, or severe skin reactions. Patients should notify their healthcare provider if they experience signs of electrolyte imbalance, such as confusion, extreme thirst, or significant changes in heartbeat.
