Oseltamivir is an influenza antiviral used for both the treatment and prevention of the flu. It must be started within 48 hours of exposure for maximal effectiveness. It is not a substitute for the seasonal flu vaccine and can be taken by vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals.  

  • Used to treatment or prevention of the flu if there is a known exposure within 48 hours
  • Typically taken twice daily for 5 days
  • May take with food to help alleviate stomach upset and capsules may be opened and mixed into a sweetened liquid
  • Decreases the risk of complications associated with the flu for high-risk individuals
  • High-risk individuals include those 65 years and older, women who are pregnant or 2 weeks postpartum, having a BMI of 40 or greater, and having chronic conditions such as cardiovascular disease, HIV, or metabolic disease
